Naada Dizi places a physically modeled Chinese bamboo flute inside GeoShred Studio, where the dizi's distinctive membrane buzz, breath-driven dynamics, and bright penetrating tone respond directly to pressure and gesture on the playing surface. The instrument is fully polyphonic, supporting chords and layered melodic lines simultaneously.
Works with MPE controllers, wind and breath controllers, and GeoShred Control, a free iPhone and iPad companion app that delivers a multi-touch expressive surface for live performance.
Naada Dizi runs inside GeoShred Studio, placing the Chinese bamboo flute's bright, penetrating voice on GeoShred's multi-row continuous pitch surface. The dizi's most distinctive feature is the dimo membrane that vibrates sympathetically to produce a buzzing tonal character found in no Western flute. Slide across the grid to shift between registers; press into the surface to shape breath intensity and control the membrane's activation. Because the instrument is polyphonic, you can layer multiple dizi voices, voice chords, or sustain held tones while tracing ornamental lines above. GeoShred's integrated FX rack adds EchoMT, Reverb, and AmpCab processing directly in the signal chain.

A Membrane That Sings. The dizi is a Chinese transverse bamboo flute with a history spanning over 2,000 years, central to Chinese folk, theatrical, and court music since the Tang and Song dynasties. What sets it apart from all other flutes is the dimo, a thin membrane of reed or bamboo skin stretched over a dedicated hole between the embouchure and the finger holes. This membrane vibrates sympathetically with the air column, adding a buzzing brightness fundamental to the dizi's tonal identity. The model captures both the membrane's characteristic resonance and the timbral contrast between the instrument's lower and upper registers.
GeoShred Studio and GeoShred Control. GeoShred Studio operates as a VST3, AU, or AUv3 plugin inside major DAWs, or as a standalone application. Its isomorphic surface is tuned in perfect fourths, providing a layout where melodic intervals repeat consistently across rows. Pressure and gesture are mapped continuously to instrument parameters, making the surface a direct conduit for expression rather than a series of on/off triggers.
GeoShred Control is a free companion app for iPhone and iPad that connects via USB, adding a second multi-touch expressive surface for live performance. MPE hardware controllers and wind or breath controllers connect directly to GeoShred Studio as well.
