Naada Pipa places the percussive brilliance and melodic range of China's 2,000-year-old classical lute inside GeoShred Studio, where rapid tremolo articulations, dynamic pluck attack, and pitch bending respond directly to pressure and gesture on the playing surface. The instrument is fully polyphonic, supporting chords and layered melodic lines simultaneously.
Works with MPE controllers, wind and breath controllers, and GeoShred Control, a free iPhone and iPad companion app that delivers a multi-touch expressive surface for live performance.
Naada Pipa runs inside GeoShred Studio, where the distinctive attack dynamics and wide tonal range of the Chinese pipa are accessible across a multi-row continuous pitch surface. Strike with force for the pipa's characteristic percussive bite, lighten your touch for delicate single-note phrases, and slide across the grid for pitch bends and ornamental flourishes. The AccelMatrix Naada physical modeling engine generates each note as a real-time acoustic event. Because the instrument is polyphonic, you can roll chords, layer tremolo passages over sustained bass notes, or voice independent melodic lines simultaneously. GeoShred's integrated FX rack adds EchoMT, Reverb, and AmpCab processing directly in the signal chain.

From Silk Road Courts to the Modern Stage. The pipa arrived in China along the Silk Road and became one of the dominant instruments of Tang dynasty court music. Its name is onomatopoeic, describing the forward and backward plucking motions that define its playing technique. With frets spanning both the short neck and the pear-shaped body, the pipa covers an unusually wide range for a lute-family instrument. Its sonic character spans percussive forte attacks, rapid tremolo passages that simulate sustained tone, rolling chords, and delicate single-note lines at near-silence. The model captures this dynamic breadth, responding to gesture intensity across the full spectrum from whisper to strike.
GeoShred Studio and GeoShred Control. GeoShred Studio operates as a VST3, AU, or AUv3 plugin inside major DAWs, or as a standalone application. Its isomorphic surface is tuned in perfect fourths, providing a layout where melodic intervals repeat consistently across rows. Pressure and gesture are mapped continuously to instrument parameters, making the surface a direct conduit for expression rather than a series of on/off triggers.
GeoShred Control is a free companion app for iPhone and iPad that connects via USB, adding a second multi-touch expressive surface for live performance. MPE hardware controllers and wind or breath controllers connect directly to GeoShred Studio as well.
