Of the standard woodwinds, the clarinet was the last instrument to be integrated into the symphony orchestra. The clarinet in Eb is a sopranino clarinet, and higher pitched than the more commonly used clarinet in Bb. The instrument was recorded in the relatively dry and controlled environment of Vienna’s second studio, the Silent Stage, and offers all common articulations.

Little Sister. The Eb clarinet measures only 49 cm (19.3”) and is a fourth higher than the clarinet in Bb. It is not used much in orchestras and marching bands, but it’s an important player in clarinet choirs.

Bright Voice. In the orchestra, the Eb clarinet is usually played by only one musician, as it has a bright sound similar to that of the piccolo flute. There are pieces for Eb clarinet, e.g., by Giacinto Scelsi, Arnold Schönberg, and Anton Webern.

Sampling. The library features a full set of articulations, offering various short and long notes, legato (including fast legatos that let you play trills), crescendos and diminuendos, sfz, sffz, pfp, flutter tongue, and repetitions. Recording the samples relatively dry at the Silent Stage makes it possible to place them on your virtual stage and in the stereo field wherever you like, but also enables you to integrate them with the Synchron Series by using the internal convolution reverb of Vienna Synchron Stage.
