The tenor trombone is the most widely used trombone, becoming a standard in both orchestras and jazz ensembles for its vocal-like qualities and smooth yet powerful sound that can cut through even the densest arrangements and mixes. The muted tenor trombone retains these characteristics while adding a softer, more lyrical dimension. Its tone spans from hushed whispers to commanding phrases, making it indispensable in both solo and ensemble contexts. Recorded at Vienna’s purpose-built Silent Stage with its tight and controlled ambience, this instrument brings the true timbre of the muted tenor trombone to your studio.
Velvety Voice. The muted performances of the tenor trombone feature two different types of dampers (straight mute and cup mute). They are characterized by their soft yet rich tone, integrating harmoniously with various string, woodwind or brass sections and are perfectly suited for lyrical melodic solo lines.
Smooth Mechanics. The trombone’s slide mechanism enables smooth, gliding transitions between notes, a feature further enhanced by the subtle coloration of a mute. This library captures every nuance, from fluid glissandos to resonant dynamics, allowing the muted trombone’s distinctive sound to bring warmth, tension, or a touch of melancholy to a wide range of musical genres.
Versatile & Expressive. The library features a full set of expressive and dynamic articulations, offering various short and long notes, legatos (including fast legatos), crescendos and diminuendos, sfz, sffz, pfp, flutter tongue, as well as half and whole tone trills. Recording the samples relatively dry at the Silent Stage makes it possible to place them on your virtual stage and in the stereo field wherever you like, but also enables you to integrate the instrument with the Synchron Series by using the internal convolution reverb recreating Vienna’s own scoring stage, Vienna Synchron Stage.
