The traverso flute appears as early as the 12th century. Its heyday, however, was the baroque period, after which it was largely superseded by the concert flute as we know it today. The instrument was recorded in the relatively dry and controlled environment of Vienna’s second studio, the Silent Stage, and offers all common articulations.

Fluted. The traverso flute (Baroque flute, flauto traverso, side-blown flute) is a reedless woodwind instrument. Although the instrument had already appeared in the 12th century in Central Europe it experienced its golden era in the Baroque period as a predecessor of the modern concert flute. Unlike the modern flute the Baroque flute has just one valve and a limited key range of about 2½ octaves.

Wood Before Metal. The body is made of ebony, grenadilla wood, boxwood, or olive wood, so that its warm and soft sound is more similar to the recorder than to the modern (transverse) flute. Today Baroque flutes are played as part of the historically informed (authentic) performance practice.

Recording. The instrument samples were recorded rather dry at the Silent Stage, making it possible to place it on your virtual stage wherever you like, but also to integrate it with the Synchron Series collections. Use the internal convolution reverb for perfect placement options in the large hall of Vienna Synchron Stage, or switch off any internal reverb and use an external reverberation tool of your choice, such as the rooms of Vienna MIR Pro 3D.
