The Muted Middle Voice

  • Solo viola played with a mute
  • Natural flow of captivating performances
  • Same vast arsenal of expressive articulations as Synchron Solo Viola
  • Captured on Stage A of Vienna Synchron Stage
  • 11 microphone positions
  • Several positions on stage (center, solo, 1st chair)
  • Perfectly mixed with production-ready presets

Muting the viola deepens its already dusky character, softening the tone into something warmer and more veiled. It is more than a filter on the sound - with the mute in place, the instrument invites a different touch and a different kind of phrasing. As the warm middle voice of the muted string quartet, Synchron Solo Viola (sordino) adds rich, introspective color to the ensemble, performed by Anna Firsanova, solo violist of the Vienna Synchron Orchestra, in the large Stage A of Vienna Synchron Stage.

The Unsung Hero, Now Veiled. Sitting between the brilliance of the violin and the depth of the cello, the viola has always been the string family’s quiet, expressive heart - and the mute draws that quality even further inward. Synchron Solo Viola (sordino) once again features Anna Firsanova, solo violist of the Vienna Synchron Orchestra. Originally from Moscow, she studied in her hometown and in Vienna, and is currently co-principal violist of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz. Her playing can be heard on recordings such as The Acolyte and the anime Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul. With the mute in place, she reveals a softer, more intimate side of the viola, without losing any of its warm, characterful voice.

A Complete Muted Palette. The sampling sessions covered essentially the same comprehensive set of articulations as the original Synchron Solo Viola, but every note was recorded with the mute in place. Short notes include various spiccatos, staccatos, détachés, and ricochet. Long notes come with different releases and slides. Legato variants include normal, agile, slurred, portamento, and zigane. Sforzatos, tremolos, trills, harmonics, and pizzicatos round out the palette. The Crossfade Editor in the Synchron Player allows for seamless blending between articulations, letting composers shape transitions with the same precision and musicality the original collection is known for - only this time, in a softer, more intimate light.

Microphone Setup - Standard & Full Library. The Standard Library and Full Library of Synchron Solo Viola (sordino) both include the same articulations. The difference lies in the number of provided microphone positions
